Grocery KGB
Congratulations to Kurt and Cindy. We see that they will be leaving back home today. Funny how things work out. We arrived on the same day and they are leaving more than a week ahead of us. We are so jealous but extremely happy that you will all be home soon.
We really don't know for sure when we will be leaving. I am having our translator purchase train tickets for next week for all of us for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night. We are doing this to make sure we all have seats available. We aren't taking any chances. The train cars are very inexpensive and it's not that big a deal to do this.
Alex actually spoke some English to us out of nowhere and it amazed us. He seems very intelligent. I don't think language will be too much of a problem with him.
We may be getting the two kids full time this afternoon. We will have to scramble for appropriate sleeping arrangements for all of us. They said they want to stay with us so hopefully we will get them before the Italians arrive.
We had to play in our little playground today and it was amazing to me how unsafe this place is. There are numerous little spikes that stick up from the ground. No idea what they are but it would be so easy for someone to fall and impale themselves on them or even worse. There is an iron gazebo in one area that the kids swing on like monkey bars. And right below where they are swinging is a bunch of razer sharp sheet metal sticking out of the ground. One small slip and you are sandwhich meat. You even see these metal spikes sticking out of the ground when walking around town. I can see American lawyers killing each other over the possibility of filing law suits over all these potential hazards. They don't have that problem over here in Ukraine. But I'm sure its only a matter of time.
There must really be a problem with theft at the supermarkets here. When you enter you have to check in all bags into a locker. Then when you walk around there is maybe 4 to 6 Grocery KGB standing around or walking around and constantly watching you. They also have headsets to coordinate potential pre-emptive strikes against evil doers. At first we thought it was really odd but we are now used to it. We just walk around and do our business. One day they caught some lady. She had a big slab of cheese tucked into her coat and one guy stopped her and forced her to empty her pockets. She was screaming and yelling like crazy. Everyone in the place stopped to watch. I paid for my stuff and left but it was obvious that she was busted. It would be hard to explain walking around in a grocery store with a 2lb. block of fresh cheese in your jacket. I don't know what happened to her, maybe no one does. Siberia???
The weather here today is amazing. About 75 degrees and no wind. Everybody is walking around with spring wear getting ready for the Easter Weekend. I am crying like a little baby that I do not have my bike underneath me. This is perfect weather for it.
